I don’t know about you, but staying in shape post-college has been a lot harder than I thought. Not only is joining a gym expensive, but finding the time to devote to working out on a daily or weekly basis, has proven very difficult.
When I first moved to New York City almost three years ago, I thought that joining a regular gym like New York Sports Club,would be the best option for me. I mean, working out at my college gym seemed to work so why wouldn’t this, right? I was so wrong. While I would often times motivate myself to at least make it to the gym after work, I found that when it came to actually working out, I was able to motivate myself for a mere 30 minutes, if that. Although I would head to their abs class from time to time, none of it seemed to be yielding the results, or the motivation, that I was looking for.
Luckily, after expressing my frustration to my friends, someone recommended ClassPass, a monthly membership that allows you to take classes at thousands of different studios around the city. After signing up for their two-week trial membership, I was hooked.
I’m the kind of person that needs a variety of workouts to stay motivated and in shape and all thanks to ClassPass, I’ve finally found a routine that works for me and my body.
As far as classes, I’m a BIG fan of high intensity/cardio classes. Growing up swimming competitively, these are the only workouts that seem to get my heart rate back to those of my swimming days. I’ll usually try to do these a max of two days a week, sometimes three if I’ve been working out consistently. If you’re in the NYC area, I highly recommend PushLab, Regenerate and FlyWheel.
Thanks to the freedom that ClassPass allows, I’ve been able to try out different classes from time to time. This has allowed me to discover my new love for pilates and barre classes, so 2-3 times per week I love to head to one of these classes to focus on toning and stretching. My favorites are Exhale, Pure Barre, Pilates Challenge and Pilates on the Square.
I also like to mix in different classes, like Kettlebell, TRX, abs, etc., along with some running from time to time. I’ve also just discovered an aqua cycling studio right by my office so I’m looking forward to trying that out in the near future!
I’ve found that everyone’s body is different and it’s all about finding what workouts you enjoy and what works best for your body. Some people prefer running 5 times a week, while some devote all of their time to cycling. Although it took me some time to figure it out, I’ve found that variety is key for me.
